Kate Pond Wellspring Sculpture

project overview

The Public Works has collaborated with Kate Pond—an award-winning sculptor in concrete and steel whose large and evocative works can be found in locations both private and public around the globe—on nine commissioned sculptures. It has been an honor to work with Kate and add our own creative insights, engineering skills and fabricating muscle to help her take her sculptures to an amazing level.

The “Wellspring” piece was a commissioned sculpture for Brandeis University in Massachusetts. Kate worked with us during much of the fabrication here in Colorado.  When fabrication was complete, we then personally transported the piece across the country and oversaw its installation.

This fourteen foot tall and 2,000 pound piece was made out of 5/8” thick plate steel. The hand-formed initial design was taken into SolidWorks (a 3-D CAD design software) and then exported to a plasma cutter. We then worked at Denver Boiler to roll the giant piece of art.  And then, we brought it back to our shop for welding and grinding. It was finished with a beautiful powder-coat.
