the Battery621 story

In the spring of 2010, The Public Works, in partnership with Wink Inc.— a cutting-edge media and digital asset management company—purchased a 30,000 square foot building on one of the busiest intersections in Denver, Colorado. Just one block from the Denver Santa Fe Art District, this location serves as a gateway between Denver and the mountains beyond.

We knew this structure was a great opportunity awaiting its next incarnation. Like all things we do, we seized the opportunity. With passion, determination and hard work, within four months, we had converted a stripped warehouse space and revitalized a neighborhood. Every aspect of the building remodel was looked at from the most progressive, creative, and environmentally-sustainable angle. Features of Battery621 include: an open floor plan; large central common space; modular wall systems; modern and unique Turnstone office furniture; and over fifty percent re-purposed materials in the retail showroom of the global skiwear company, Spyder. We designed Battery621 so that maximum space can be utilized flexibly. Battery621 is now a special and distinctive destination in Denver.

Battery621 serves as The Public Works’ headquarters. It is our dream home, accommodating our offices, fabrication and manufacturing shop, and photography studio. It is also a creative incubator, housing twelve like-minded and cutting-edge brands. These tenants were chosen through a very deliberate process to ensure all share creative and social visions and compliment each other’s skill sets. The cross-pollination of these tenants has far exceeded any of our original expectations.

In short, Battery621 is a premier place of business during the day and a very unique event space after hours. In Battery621, we are surrounded by companies, friends and events that constantly inspire us.

the Supple story

The Supple Collection is a unique brand of sustainable library furniture, designed, fabricated and brought to market by The Public Works. This line of furnishings is a great example of what The Public Works was formed to accomplish. We bring a broad skill set to the table, enabling us to engage in the full lifecycle of each furnishing. We conduct market research into new directions in library architecture and design, while studying how changing lifestyles direct needs of patrons. We design, engineer, and fabricate each of the pieces of the Collection, with expertise in, and familiarity with, a broad selection of material types.

The Supple Collection is inspired by forward-thinking librarians and modern library architects and interior designers who strive to redefine once dark, quiet spaces into vibrant places that welcome social interaction and the sharing of knowledge and materials. At The Public Works, we’re excited about this new notion of libraries and have been studious understudies of those leading the way. Each of the designs of The Supple Collection embody this excitement. Embracing this new perception of the library environment, our designs focus on mobile merchandising pieces that are adaptable to the evolving needs of today’s dynamic library. We want to ensure that what we create today will be useful long into the future.

In every design, we flex specifications to best serve the individual needs and desires of the local community.  We work intimately with our clients to ensure that all those who interact with the furniture—librarians and their clientele alike—find the experience enjoyable. We create furniture that encourages library patrons to become engaged with library collections, technology-based pieces like the Jump mobile reference desk that bring librarians out into the flow of consumer traffic, and computer stations that are conveniently placed through-out the library environment that have online public access catalogue software installed so that customers can easily self-direct their searches. Way-finding signage helps patrons self-guide themselves through the library environments to areas of particular interest.

In addition to being dedicated to library environments, we at The Public Works are dedicated to a sustainable environment for future generations. As a business, we seek to enrich communities, while striving to decrease our footprint on the earth. Every piece of furniture we create is fabricated with care by artisan hands. The majority of our production takes place in a solar-powered manufacturing center in Evergreen, Colorado. And, whenever possible, we have delivered our pieces using self-produced biodiesel from used waste oil.

We encourage you to take a look through the Supple Collection website and share your thoughts with us.

the Spyder story

Spyder, a superior, high-tech, global skiwear company, first approached The Public Works for our photography expertise. Our first year working with Spyder was spent photographing athletes to tell the Spyder brand story. As Spyder’s needs expanded and they came to understand the extent and diversity of our capabilities, our partnership expanded. Now, we not only shoot all of Spyder’s imagery, we also manage their team of international athletes. And, our headquarters houses Spyder’s global showroom, which we helped design and construct.

Spyder Photography
The Public Works shoots a broad range of imagery for Spyder. Our photography work for Spyder includes: action, lifestyle, in-studio product, portraiture, and on-location shoots. We even shoot and produce moving pictures for Spyder including dynamic 360-degree, on-body, product videos. Through our work with Spyder, we are thrilled to be able to photograph some of the best skiers in the world in some of the world’s most beautiful places.

Spyder Sports Marketing
In managing Spyder’s team of international athletes, The Public Works’ responsibilities are as complex and varied as the athletes themselves. We manage the team budget, and, in doing so, look for every possible way to maximize the return on investment of the athlete program throughout all divisions of the company — from product design, to sales, to retail store appearances. We also recruit, negotiate contracts, and advise the athletes with their career decisions, looking to best leverage each athlete’s unique skills and personality with the brand of Spyder, pushing athlete-driven content through all media channels. With our wide understanding of the entire product and business cycle we also ensure that the athlete program interacts and adds value to other areas such as product design, sales and retail.

Skiing will always be a sport that is driven by the heroes: Julia Mancuso winning multiple Olympic medals; Chris Davenport summiting Mt. Everest; and Colby West finding new ways to entertain and inspire. At The Public Works, it is our job to make sure each athlete’s unique feats are shared with the consumer. In doing so, we help to create better product and, in turn, successfully help sell the product.

Spyder Showroom Fabrication
The Public Works’ headquarters—a cutting-edge, energy-efficient, 30,000 square foot building located on one of the busiest intersections in Denver, Colorado—serves as a creative incubator and houses twelve cutting-edge brands, including Spyder’s global showroom/gallery. In creating Spyder’s global showroom, The Public Works collaborated with Spyder’s in-house designer to conceptualize and construct a stunning, functional space. What we created, allows Spyder to entertain retailers from around the globe, host events, and display their brand.

the Red Bull story

One of our longest-standing clients is Red Bull.  The Red Bull brand embodies much that we at The Public Works strive for in our business.  This is especially true in regards to their control of brand identity and attention to detail, as well as their constant and consistent quality brand presentation.

We have a deep understanding of both the Red Bull brand and how Red Bull wishes to communicate its brand.  This enables us to create both physical products and compelling imagery that powerfully communicate to their demographic.  In our work with Red Bull, we have photographed dozens of athletes, artists, musicians and events.  We have also designed, engineered and constructed original marketing products.  Each product created by The Public Works provides a distinct way of telling Red Bull’s unique and powerful story, while also addressing specific client needs.

Red Bull Photography
For five years and counting, we have been shooting photos for Red Bull Photofiles.  Photofiles was created to be “The Getty Images of action sports and cultural events”.  In the beginning of our work with Red Bull, we primarily shot snow sports action.  Understanding our significant versatility, Red Bull asked us to expand our work with them to include photography of their culture and events.  In our work with Red Bull, we feel fortunate to have been able to capture and create imagery of world class athletes, internationally recognized musicians, and the most progressive events on the planet.  We put every possible effort into capturing the glory of the Red Bull experience.

Red Bull Fabrication
The level of respect that we hold for the Red Bull brand, along with the appetite we have for what we do and who we are working with, make it easy for us to design projects that push the boundaries of our fabrication capabilities.  We are constantly exploring new materials and processes to build unique, durable, beautiful, functional pieces that tell the Red Bull story while sticking within their very established and controlled brand guidelines.  Examples of items created by us for Red Bull range from: hand-etched glass art for a venue in Steamboat, Colorado, to a permanent 50-foot metal arch start/finish gate at a race track.
